Joseph Whiting Dimock II was a 21-year-old soldier from Wildwood, Illinois. He served as a Specialist with Company E, 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, an elite airborne infantry unit based at Hunter Army Airfield in Georgia.
According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Dimock was killed on July 10, 2010, in Salerno, a forward operating base in Khost Province, eastern Afghanistan. The official release stated he died of wounds sustained from small arms fire during a combat operation.
Dimock's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His unit was operating in Khost Province, a region along the Pakistan border that saw intense insurgent activity, particularly during the 2010 troop surge aimed at disrupting militant networks.
The Army announced his death on July 12, 2010. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. His remains were returned to Illinois, where he was buried with military honors.
He is memorialized on the 75th Ranger Regiment's fallen soldier roll and at the Global War on Terrorism memorial at Fort Liberty, North Carolina. His name is also inscribed on a veterans memorial in his hometown.
