Their Story
Anthony Attilio Dilisio was from Macomb, Michigan. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, of the II Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, Dilisio died on May 30, 2010, in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was killed by the detonation of an improvised explosive device while conducting combat operations.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, Helmand province was a major center of insurgent activity and a focus of a U.S. troop surge aimed at securing population centers.
Dilisio's body was returned to Michigan. A funeral service was held at St. Peter Catholic Church in Mount Clemens, and he was buried with military honors at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township, according to local news reports.
He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. Dilisio is remembered by family and friends as a dedicated Marine who loved his country, as noted in tributes published at the time of his death.
