Their Story

Albert Edward Difederico was a 55-year-old Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, assigned to the Naval Air Facility in Washington, D.C. He was a resident of Chantilly, Virginia.

On September 20, 2008, Difederico was killed in a suicide bombing at the Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, Pakistan. The attack occurred when a dump truck laden with explosives detonated at the hotel's security gate. The blast killed at least 54 people and wounded over 250 others.

Difederico's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. The operation included a significant logistical and intelligence network in neighboring Pakistan, where the U.S. military and civilian personnel were present. The Marriott Hotel was a frequent gathering place for Western diplomats, military personnel, and businesspeople.

Following the attack, the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed Difederico's death. He was listed in the Defense Casualty Analysis System on the day he died. The bombing was widely reported as one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Pakistan's capital.
