U.S. Army Specialist Jesse Wayne Dietrich, 20, of Venus, Texas, was killed in action on August 25, 2011, in Senjaray, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Jesse Wayne Dietrich was a 20-year-old soldier from Venus, Texas. He served with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York.
On August 25, 2011, Specialist Dietrich was on a dismounted patrol in the village of Senjaray, in the Zhari district of Kandahar province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit came under small-arms fire from insurgent forces. Dietrich was killed in the engagement.
Dietrich's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the Zhari district was a significant area of operations for coalition forces, with frequent clashes reported in and around Senjaray.
Following his death, the Department of Defense issued a formal casualty announcement. His body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Venus, Texas.
Dietrich was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Drum and on Panel 29W, Line 87 of the Afghanistan Veterans Memorial Wall in Ontario, California.
