U.S. Army Sergeant Nicholas Michael Dickhut, 23, of Rochester, Minnesota, was killed in Kandahar, Afghanistan on April 30, 2012 while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom.
Their Story
Nicholas Michael Dickhut was a 23-year-old soldier from Rochester, Minnesota. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington state.
On April 30, 2012, Sergeant Dickhut was killed by enemy small-arms fire in the Dand district of Kandahar province, Afghanistan, according to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports. He was on a dismounted patrol when the incident occurred.
His death took place during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2012, the conflict was focused on counterinsurgency operations, with Kandahar province being a significant area of Taliban activity and a priority for international forces.
Following his death, the Army posthumously awarded Dickhut the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He was survived by his parents and a sister. His body was returned to Minnesota for burial.
Sergeant Dickhut was remembered by his unit and family as a dedicated soldier. A memorial service was held at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and his name is inscribed on the Minnesota Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial in St. Paul.
