Ara Tyler Deysie was an 18-year-old soldier from Parker, Arizona. He served as a Private First Class with Troop C, 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On May 9, 2008, Deysie was killed in southeastern Paktia province, Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained from enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol. The incident occurred in the mountainous terrain of the province's southeast, a region known for insurgent activity.
Deysie's death came during a period of Operation Enduring Freedom marked by a resurgent Taliban. By 2008, insurgent tactics, including the use of improvised explosive devices and direct fire ambushes, had intensified.
