Richard Allen Dewater was a 21-year-old soldier from Topeka, Kansas. He served as a Private First Class with Company B, 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Hood, Texas.
On April 15, 2009, Dewater was killed at Bagram Airfield (BAF), a major U.S. military base north of Kabul. The Department of Defense listed the cause as hostile fire. According to reports, the incident involved an attack on a military convoy on the base.
Dewater's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In April 2009, U.S. troop levels were increasing as part of a strategy to counter a resurgent Taliban.
His death was reported by local media in Kansas. The Topeka Capital-Journal noted his passing, and he was listed among the war dead honored by the Fort Leavenworth-based 'Eyes of Freedom' memorial traveling exhibit.
