Their Story
Preston John Dennis was a 23-year-old soldier from Redding, California. He served as a corporal with Company C, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Drum, New York. According to the U.S. Army, his service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On April 28, 2011, Corporal Dennis was killed in Nalgham, a village in the volatile Zhari District of Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile enemy action. Reports from the time indicate his unit was engaged in operations in the region.
Dennis died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the war was in its tenth year, with intense counterinsurgency operations focused on southern provinces like Kandahar, a traditional Taliban stronghold.
