Dennis, Jerod Rhoton
Private Jerod Rhoton Dennis, 19, of Soper, Oklahoma, was a U.S. Army paratrooper. He was killed in a hostile incident at Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan, on April 25, 2003.
Their Story
Jerod Rhoton Dennis was a 19-year-old from the small town of Soper, Oklahoma. He enlisted in the United States Army and was assigned as a Private to Company B, 3rd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 82nd Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On April 25, 2003, Dennis was killed at Bagram Air Base, the main U.S. military hub in Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, the cause was hostile fire. A contemporaneous report from United Press International stated he was killed when a rocket-propelled grenade struck the base.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. By April 2003, major combat operations had shifted from conventional warfare to a counterinsurgency phase. Taliban and Al-Qaeda remnants conducted attacks on coalition forces from remote bases.
Dennis's body was returned to the United States. He was buried with military honors in his home state of Oklahoma. His death was reported in local and national news outlets at the time.
Jerod Dennis is memorialized on the 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial at Fort Bragg and on online veterans' memorials. His name is listed on the Oklahoma Veterans Memorial.
