Demarsico, Michael Robert Ii
U.S. Army Specialist Michael Robert Demarsico II, 20, of North Adams, Massachusetts, was killed on August 16, 2012, in Panjwa'i, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Michael Robert Demarsico II was a 20-year-old soldier from North Adams, a small city in the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts. He served as a Specialist with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, part of the 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.
On August 16, 2012, Demarsico was on patrol in the Panjwa'i district of Kandahar province, a region historically contested by Taliban forces. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, he was killed by an improvised explosive device. The blast occurred during a period of sustained combat operations in the district.
Demarsico's death came during the later stages of Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, U.S. forces were engaged in a drawdown of troops, but heavy fighting continued in traditional Taliban strongholds like Kandahar, where clearing operations aimed to transfer security to Afghan forces.
His body was returned to Massachusetts, where he was buried in Southview Cemetery in North Adams. The Berkshire Eagle reported that hundreds of community members lined the streets of his hometown during the funeral procession to honor him.
He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other military decorations. In 2013, a memorial stone was dedicated in his honor at the North Adams Veterans Memorial.
