Master Sergeant Bernard Lee Deghand was a 42-year-old soldier from Mayetta, Kansas. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 35th Field Artillery Regiment, part of Task Force Phoenix, a unit based in Hutchinson, Kansas, that was responsible for training Afghan security forces. Deghand's military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On September 15, 2006, Deghand was killed in Kandahar province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident.
