Their Story

Marc Paul Decoteau was a 19-year-old soldier from Waterville Valley, New Hampshire. He served as a Specialist in Company C, 6th Psychological Operations Battalion, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The unit's mission involved influencing the perceptions and behavior of foreign target audiences.

Decoteau died on January 29, 2010, at Forward Operating Base Nunez in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on guard duty. The base was a key outpost for U.S. Marines and supporting units in a volatile region.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. The operation began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks and focused on combating Taliban and al-Qaeda forces. By 2010, the conflict was in a period of intense fighting and a significant troop surge.

Decoteau's body was returned to the United States. A memorial service was held in his hometown of Waterville Valley. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations for his service.

He is remembered on memorials in New Hampshire and at Fort Bragg. His name is inscribed on Panel 7W, Line 93 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Pentagon.
