Their Story

Daane Adam Deboer was a 24-year-old Marine from Ludington, Michigan. He served as a corporal with the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines, Regimental Combat Team 2, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based out of Camp Pendleton, California.

On June 25, 2010, Corporal Deboer was killed in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The Marine Corps listed his death as resulting from hostile action. No further specifics regarding the exact incident were publicly released in official casualty announcements.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In mid-2010, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in a major offensive, Operation Moshtarak, aimed at securing population centers in Helmand, including the town of Marjah, from Taliban insurgents.
