Staff Sergeant David Pirie Day, 26, of Gaylord, Michigan, was a U.S. Marine killed in Badghis Province, Afghanistan, on April 24, 2011.
Their Story
David Pirie Day was born on December 24, 1984, in Gaylord, Michigan. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned to the 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion (2d MSOB), based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant.
On April 24, 2011, Day was killed during combat operations in the Bala Murghab district of Badghis Province in northwestern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died from wounds sustained while conducting combat operations. He was 26 years old.
Day's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, the conflict was in its tenth year, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces across the country.
Following his death, Day's body was returned to the United States. A funeral service was held in his hometown of Gaylord, Michigan, on May 6, 2011. He was buried at Fairview Cemetery in Gaylord.
Staff Sergeant Day was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star with combat 'V' for valor and the Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Gaylord Veterans Memorial. He is remembered by his family, community, and fellow Marines.
