Their Story
William Brandon Dawson was a 20-year-old soldier from Tunica, Mississippi. He served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army's 109th Transportation Company, 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 3rd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, based out of Fort Richardson, Alaska.
On September 24, 2010, Dawson was killed near Combat Outpost Carwile in Afghanistan's Zabul province. According to the Department of Defense, the incident involved a vehicle rollover. The military stated the rollover was caused by hostile fire.
Dawson's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The mission involved combat operations against Taliban and Al-Qaeda forces, with U.S. and coalition troops engaged in counterinsurgency and nation-building efforts.
