Their Story
Timothy Peter Davis was a combat controller in the U.S. Air Force's 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, an elite unit based at Hurlburt Field, Florida. Combat controllers are trained to deploy with Army Special Forces and Navy SEAL teams, directing close air support and conducting reconnaissance.
On February 20, 2009, Davis was on patrol in Oruzgan province, southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. He died from wounds sustained in the blast.
Davis was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. The operation focused on counter-insurgency and training Afghan security forces, with intense combat occurring in the southern and eastern provinces.
Davis was posthumously promoted from Senior Airman to Staff Sergeant. His awards included the Bronze Star with Valor, the Purple Heart, and the Air Force Combat Action Medal. A memorial service was held at Hurlburt Field.
His name is inscribed on the Air Force Memorial in Washington, D.C., and on a memorial at his home station. The Timothy Davis Memorial Award was established at Hurlburt Field to honor outstanding enlisted combat controllers.
