Their Story

Nathan Tyler Davis was a 20-year-old soldier from Yucaipa, California. He served as a Specialist with Company C, 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), based at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska. His unit was part of the U.S. Army's airborne infantry.

According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, Davis was killed by enemy small arms fire on June 9, 2012, in the village of Tore Obeh in Ghazni province, Afghanistan. He was participating in a security operation at the time of his death.

Davis's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with U.S. and allied forces engaged in counterinsurgency operations and training Afghan national security forces.

The Army announced Davis's death the following day. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. His remains were returned to the United States.

Davis is remembered on memorials in his hometown and by his unit. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the San Bernardino County Government Center in California.
