Their Story
Justin Ray Davis was a 19-year-old soldier from Gaithersburg, Maryland. He served as a Private First Class in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company A, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York.
On June 25, 2006, Davis was killed during combat operations in the Korengal Valley of eastern Afghanistan's Kunar Province. According to military reports, his unit was engaged in a firefight with enemy forces when he was fatally wounded.
Davis's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2006, the conflict had entered a phase of intense counterinsurgency, with remote valleys like the Korengal becoming focal points for frequent, close-quarters combat between U.S. forces and Taliban and other insurgent fighters.
The Department of Defense announced his death on June 27, 2006. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum in Georgia.
Davis is remembered on memorial websites maintained by veterans' groups and in local news reports from Maryland. His unit, the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry, continued operations in the Korengal Valley for several more years, an area later documented as one of the most dangerous postings for U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
