Lance Corporal Joshua Michael Davis, 19, of Perry, Iowa, was a U.S. Marine rifleman killed in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on May 7, 2010.
Their Story
Joshua Michael Davis was born and raised in Perry, Iowa. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and was assigned as a rifleman to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 2, II Marine Expeditionary Force, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On May 7, 2010, Davis was on a foot patrol in the volatile Helmand province of southern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by hostile small arms fire during that patrol.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2010, Helmand province was a major center of insurgent activity and a focal point for U.S. Marine Corps operations.
Davis's body was returned to Iowa. A funeral service was held in Perry, where he was buried with full military honors. The Perry Community School District, from which he graduated, lowered flags in his memory.
He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. Davis is remembered on memorials in Iowa and at Camp Lejeune. His name is inscribed on Panel 10E, Line 102 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
