Jonathan Dale Davis was a 34-year-old Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps from Kayenta, Arizona. He was assigned to Headquarters Battalion, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, based at Camp Pendleton, California. His unit was the 32nd Georgian Liaison Team, part of Regimental Combat Team 7, deployed to Afghanistan.
Davis died on February 22, 2013, in the Sangin district of Helmand province. According to a U.S. Department of Defense casualty release, he was killed by enemy small arms fire while conducting combat operations. The area was a known Taliban stronghold and a focus of intense fighting for coalition forces.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001.
