Their Story

Johnathon Frank Davis was a 20-year-old soldier from Griffin, Georgia. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company A, 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, part of Task Force Fury.

On March 29, 2012, Davis was killed in Maiwand District, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device.

Davis was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in its later stages, with a major troop surge having been deployed and subsequently drawn down. Insurgent activity, including the use of IEDs, remained prevalent in regions like Kandahar.

His body was returned to the United States. The Army posthumously awarded him the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. His funeral was held in Griffin, Georgia, where he was remembered by family, friends, and fellow soldiers.

Davis is memorialized on the Griffin-Spalding County War Memorial and in the U.S. Army's official casualty records. His name is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Griffin campus of the University of Georgia.
