Staff Sgt. Joseph D'Augustine, 29, of Waldwick, New Jersey, was a U.S. Marine killed by enemy small-arms fire in Helmand province, Afghanistan, on March 27, 2012.

Their Story

Joseph D'Augustine was a 29-year-old staff sergeant from Waldwick, New Jersey. He served with the 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. His unit deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On March 27, 2012, D'Augustine was killed by enemy small-arms fire while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, a volatile region in southern Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense confirmed his death the following day.

His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2012, the conflict was in its eleventh year, with Helmand province being a focal point for Taliban insurgency and intense ground combat involving U.S. and allied forces.

D'Augustine's body was returned to the United States. His hometown of Waldwick held a public procession in his honor. The Bergen County Marine Corps League Detachment was reportedly involved in memorial events.

He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart. D'Augustine is remembered on memorial walls in New Jersey and at Camp Lejeune. His name is inscribed on the Waldwick Veterans Memorial.
