Their Story
Devin James Daniels was a 22-year-old sergeant from Kuna, Idaho. He served with the 546th Transportation Company, 82nd Special Troops Battalion, 82nd Sustainment Brigade, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His unit was responsible for logistical support, a critical and dangerous role in a theater of war.
On August 26, 2011, Sergeant Daniels was killed by enemy small-arms fire in the Kariz Sefid area of Afghanistan's Zabul province, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. He was on a mounted patrol when his unit came under attack. The incident was part of a series of engagements in the province that day.
Daniels died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His death occurred during a period of intense fighting following a troop surge aimed at countering Taliban influence, particularly in the country's south and east. The conflict in Afghanistan continued for years after his death.
The Department of Defense announced his death on August 28, 2011. His body was returned to Idaho, where a funeral service was held. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations.
Sergeant Daniels is remembered on memorials in Idaho and at Fort Bragg. His name is inscribed on the Idaho Fallen Soldier Memorial in the state's Veterans Cemetery. Family and fellow soldiers have described him as a dedicated soldier and a loyal friend.
