Their Story
Corporal Leopold Fred Damas was a 26-year-old Marine from Floral Park, New York. He served with Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 3, of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade (Forward), based out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
On August 17, 2009, Damas was killed during a patrol in the Garmsir district of Helmand province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was conducting a dismounted patrol when they were struck by an improvised explosive device. The explosion resulted in hostile casualties.
Damas died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. By 2009, the conflict was in a period of intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in southern provinces like Helmand, where U.S. and allied forces engaged Taliban fighters in contested rural districts.
Following his death, Damas was posthumously promoted to the rank of corporal. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors. Public records indicate memorial services were held in his home state.
