U.S. Army Specialist Michael Anthony Dahl Jr., 23, of Moreno Valley, California, was killed in a hostile incident at Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan, on October 17, 2009.

Their Story

Michael Anthony Dahl Jr. was a 23-year-old soldier from Moreno Valley, California. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Company B, 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment, 5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Lewis, Washington.

On October 17, 2009, Dahl was killed at Kandahar Airfield, a major NATO base in southern Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident. Specific details of the event were not widely released in public reporting at the time.

Dahl's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2009, the conflict was marked by a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and intense fighting in southern provinces like Kandahar, where insurgent forces contested control.

Dahl was one of at least eight U.S. service members killed in Afghanistan on October 17, 2009, making it one of the deadliest days for American forces that year. His death was reported by national news outlets including the Associated Press, which listed him among the day's casualties.

He is memorialized on the iCasualties.org website tracking coalition fatalities in Afghanistan and on the Fallen Heroes Project website. His name is inscribed on the Moreno Valley Veterans Memorial.
