Paul Orazio II Cuzzupe, 23, of Plant City, Florida, was a Private First Class in the U.S. Army. He died on August 8, 2010, in Akhtar-Mohammad-Khar, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Paul Orazio II Cuzzupe was a 23-year-old from Plant City, Florida. He served as a Private First Class with G Company, 3rd Squadron, 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment, part of Task Force Dragoon.
On August 8, 2010, Cuzzupe was killed in the village of Akhtar-Mohammad-Khar, in Kandahar province. According to military reports, his unit was conducting a dismounted patrol when it was struck by an improvised explosive device. The blast killed Cuzzupe and wounded another soldier.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2009, a surge of U.S. forces was ordered into southern Afghanistan, including Kandahar province, to counter a resurgent Taliban. The 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment was deployed as part of this effort.
Cuzzupe's body was returned to the United States. He was buried with military honors at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. His family and community in Plant City held memorial services.
Paul Cuzzupe is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at MacDill Air Force Base and on online veterans' memorials. His name is inscribed on the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment's memorial at Rose Barracks in Germany.
