Staff Sergeant Kurt Robert Curtiss, 27, of Murray, Utah, was killed in action on August 26, 2009, in the Sar Howzeh District of Afghanistan.
Their Story
Kurt Robert Curtiss was a 27-year-old Staff Sergeant from Murray, Utah. He served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 501st Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Richardson, Alaska. According to military records, his service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa prior to his assignment in Afghanistan.
On August 26, 2009, Curtiss was killed by enemy forces in the Sar Howzeh District of Afghanistan's Zabul province. The Department of Defense stated he died of wounds sustained from hostile fire during a combat operation.
Curtiss was killed during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2009, the conflict was marked by a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and intense fighting in southern and eastern provinces like Zabul, where insurgent forces contested control.
Following his death, Curtiss was posthumously promoted from Sergeant to Staff Sergeant. He was survived by his wife and children. A memorial service was held at Fort Richardson, and he was buried at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Colorado.
Staff Sergeant Curtiss was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart, among other decorations. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Utah Veterans Memorial Park.
