Their Story
Jonathan Michael Curtis was a 24-year-old soldier from Belmont, Massachusetts. He served as a Specialist with Company A, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His military service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.
On November 1, 2010, Specialist Curtis was killed by enemy small-arms fire while on patrol near Combat Outpost Senjaray in the Zhari District of Kandahar Province. The outpost was a forward operating position for U.S. and Afghan forces in a region known for insurgent activity. The Department of Defense officially announced his death two days later.
Curtis died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In late 2010, the conflict was in its ninth year, with a major focus on clearing insurgent strongholds in southern provinces like Kandahar. His unit, part of the 101st Airborne Division, was engaged in counterinsurgency operations in the volatile Zhari District.
Following his death, the Army posthumously awarded Specialist Curtis the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations. He was survived by his parents and siblings. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried with military honors.
