First Sergeant Michael Seafred Curry Jr. was a 37-year-old soldier from Dania Beach, Florida. He served with Company D, 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, based in Vicenza, Italy. His military service included deployments to Afghanistan, the Philippines, and the Horn of Africa.
On July 23, 2007, Curry died from wounds sustained during a firefight with enemy forces in the Sarobi District of Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he was killed while conducting combat operations.
Curry's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In mid-2007, U.S. and NATO forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations, particularly in eastern provinces like Kabul, where Sarobi is located.
Following his death, Curry was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His battalion commander stated Curry was a respected leader who cared deeply for his soldiers.
