U.S. Army Sergeant Justin Eric Culbreth, 26, of Warrenton, Missouri, died in Kandahar, Afghanistan, on November 17, 2010, from hostile action.

Their Story

Justin Eric Culbreth was a 26-year-old infantry sergeant from Warrenton, Missouri. He served with Company D, 1st Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The unit is part of the 101st Airborne Division, historically known as the 'Rakkasans'.

On November 17, 2010, Sergeant Culbreth was killed in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he died of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. The attack occurred during a dismounted patrol.

His death came during a period of intense fighting in Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan. In late 2010, coalition forces conducted major operations in Kandahar, a Taliban stronghold, as part of a strategy to secure key population centers.

Culbreth's death was reported by several news outlets, including the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, which noted his Missouri roots. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations for his service.

He is memorialized on the 101st Airborne Division memorial at Fort Campbell and on online veterans' tributes. His battalion continued its deployment in Afghanistan following his death.
