U.S. Army Specialist Josiah Dennis Crumpler, 27, of Hillsborough, North Carolina, was killed in action on March 1, 2010, in Bala Murghab, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Josiah Dennis Crumpler was a 27-year-old soldier from Hillsborough, North Carolina. He served as a Specialist with Company A, 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

According to U.S. military reports, Crumpler died on March 1, 2010, in the district of Bala Murghab in Afghanistan's Badghis Province. The Department of Defense stated his death was the result of hostile enemy action. At the time, his unit was engaged in operations in the volatile northwestern region of the country.

Crumpler's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2010, U.S. and NATO forces were conducting a major troop surge, focusing on clearing insurgent strongholds in southern and northern Afghanistan, including remote areas like Bala Murghab.

His death was reported by multiple news outlets, including the Raleigh News & Observer, which noted he was survived by his wife and other family members. The Army posthumously awarded him the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other commendations.

He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists maintained by the Department of Defense and on several online veterans' memorial sites. His name is included on the North Carolina Fallen Heroes memorial.
