Cross, Peter Kyle
U.S. Army Private First Class Peter Kyle Cross, 20, of Saginaw, Texas, was killed in action on June 26, 2009, at Forward Operating Base Shank, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Peter Kyle Cross was a 20-year-old soldier from Saginaw, Texas. He served as a Private First Class with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Drum, New York. His unit was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On June 26, 2009, Cross died from wounds sustained in a combat incident at Forward Operating Base Shank in Logar Province, Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day. Official reports listed the cause as injuries from a non-combat related incident, which was under investigation.
Cross's death occurred during a period of intensified conflict in Afghanistan. By 2009, insurgent forces had regrouped, and the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) was rising sharply. U.S. and allied forces were engaged in major counter-insurgency operations, leading to increased casualties during that summer.
The Army posthumously awarded Cross the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His remains were returned to Texas, where he was buried with military honors at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
He is remembered on memorials at Fort Drum and by his hometown. His name is inscribed on the Saginaw Veterans Memorial.
