Their Story
Sergeant First Class Stephen Baxter Cribben was a 33-year-old U.S. Army Special Forces soldier from Simi Valley, California. He was assigned to Company D, 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Carson, Colorado.
According to U.S. Department of Defense statements, Cribben died on November 4, 2017, from wounds sustained during a firefight with enemy forces in Logar Province, Afghanistan. He was serving on a train, advise, and assist mission with Afghan partners at the time of the incident.
Cribben's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. mission that succeeded the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) combat role in Afghanistan in January 2015. The operation focused on counterterrorism and training Afghan National Defense and Security Forces.
The Pentagon announced his death the following day. He was posthumously promoted from Staff Sergeant to Sergeant First Class. His awards included the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
Cribben was remembered by his unit as a dedicated and professional Green Beret. He is interred at the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
