Their Story

Zainah Caye Creamer was a 28-year-old sergeant from Texarkana, Texas, serving in the U.S. Army's 212th Military Police Detachment, Headquarters Battalion, based at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. She was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On January 12, 2011, Sgt. Creamer was killed in Kandahar province, southern Afghanistan. According to the Department of Defense, her death resulted from hostile action. Specific details of the incident were not widely released in initial reports.

Her death occurred during a period of intense fighting following the 2010 U.S. troop surge in Afghanistan. Kandahar province, a historical Taliban stronghold, was the focus of major coalition operations aimed at securing population centers and degrading insurgent networks.

The Army posthumously awarded Creamer the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. Her remains were returned to the United States, and she was memorialized in services at Fort Belvoir and in her home state of Texas.

Sgt. Creamer is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Belvoir and is listed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Texas Capitol. Her name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial in Washington, D.C.
