Lance Corporal Layton Bradly Crass was from Richmond, Indiana. He served as an active-duty Marine with Golf Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, based out of Twentynine Palms, California.
On June 14, 2008, Crass was killed during a combat operation in Farah province in western Afghanistan. The U.S. Department of Defense listed his death as resulting from hostile action. He was 22 years old.
Crass died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2008, the conflict saw a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and combat operations, particularly in southern and western provinces like Farah.
