U.S. Army Corporal Daniel Lee Cox, 26, of Parsons, Kansas, was killed in action on September 12, 2009, in the Meydan Shahr District of Afghanistan.
Their Story
Daniel Lee Cox was a 26-year-old soldier from Parsons, Kansas. He served as a Corporal in Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Drum, New York. He deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On September 12, 2009, Cox was on a mounted patrol along a road known as Route Ferrari in the Meydan Shahr District of Wardak province. According to the Department of Defense, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. He was killed in the blast.
Cox's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Wardak province, a region south of Kabul where insurgent forces were active. The U.S. military had recently launched operations to secure key transportation routes ahead of Afghanistan's presidential election.
The Department of Defense announced his death on September 14, 2009. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried in his hometown of Parsons, Kansas. His family and community held memorial services in his honor.
Corporal Cox was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. He is remembered on memorials in Kansas and at Fort Drum, and his name is inscribed on Panel 19W, Line 90 of the Afghanistan War Memorial at the National Infantry Museum.
