Peter John Courcy was a 22-year-old soldier from Frisco, Texas. He served as an active-duty infantryman with Company D, 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

On February 10, 2009, Corporal Courcy was killed in Salerno, a forward operating base in Afghanistan's Khost province. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident. Specific details of the engagement were not widely released, but the area was a known insurgent stronghold.

Courcy's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In early 2009, U.S. forces were engaged in intense counterinsurgency operations in eastern provinces like Khost, which borders Pakistan's tribal regions.
