Their Story
Bernard Paul Corpuz was a 28-year-old soldier from Watsonville, California. He served as a corporal in Company B, 321st Military Intelligence Battalion, part of Task Force Guardian based at Fort Hood, Texas.
On June 11, 2006, Corpuz was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in Orgun-E, a district in Afghanistan's Paktika province near the border with Pakistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day.
Corpuz died during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2006, U.S. and coalition forces were engaged in counterinsurgency operations against Taliban and Al-Qaeda fighters, particularly in volatile eastern provinces like Paktika.
Corpuz was posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant. He was buried with military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart.
He is remembered on memorials in his hometown and by his unit. The 321st Military Intelligence Battalion later honored fallen members, including Corpuz, in unit memorials.
