Jeffrey Douglas Cooper was a 25-year-old from Mill Creek, Washington. He served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
On September 10, 2016, Cooper died in a non-combat incident in Al Jahara, Kuwait, according to a Department of Defense news release. The release stated he died from a non-combat related injury, and the incident was under investigation. He was supporting Operation Inherent Resolve from Kuwait at the time of his death.
Operation Inherent Resolve, the U.S.-led coalition campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Iraq and Syria, began in August 2014. By late 2016, coalition forces were engaged in major offensives, including the battle for Mosul. Kuwait served as a critical logistical and staging hub for these operations.
