Their Story
Gabriel David Conde was a 22-year-old soldier from Loveland, Colorado. He served as an infantryman with Company A, 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, based at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska.
On April 30, 2018, Conde was engaged in combat operations in Tagab District, Kapisa Province, Afghanistan. According to a U.S. Department of Defense release, he was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a patrol. The incident was reported to have occurred during an engagement with insurgent forces.
Conde's death occurred during Operation Freedom's Sentinel, the U.S. military mission in Afghanistan that succeeded Operation Enduring Freedom in 2015. The mission's stated objectives included training, advising, and assisting Afghan forces and conducting counterterrorism operations. In 2018, Kapisa Province remained an active area of conflict with insurgent activity.
Following his death, Conde was posthumously promoted from Private First Class to Specialist. A memorial service was held at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in May 2018. His body was returned to Colorado, where he was buried with military honors at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.
Conde was remembered by his unit and community. A scholarship fund was reportedly established in his name at his alma mater, Berthoud High School. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Colorado State Capitol.
