Private First Class Julian Lee Colvin, 21, of Birmingham, Alabama, was killed in action on July 22, 2012, in Zharay, Afghanistan, while serving with the U.S. Army.

Their Story

Julian Lee Colvin was a 21-year-old soldier from Birmingham, Alabama. He served as a Private First Class with Company A, 508th Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Colvin died on July 22, 2012, in the Zharay district of Kandahar province. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by enemy small arms fire while on patrol. The Zharay district was a known insurgent stronghold and a focal point for coalition clearing operations during that period.

Operation Enduring Freedom was the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict involved coalition forces, the Afghan National Security Forces, and insurgent groups, primarily the Taliban. By 2012, the war was in a phase characterized by intense counterinsurgency operations in provinces like Kandahar.

Colvin's death was reported by the Department of Defense and noted in local Alabama media. The Birmingham News published an article confirming his hometown and unit. His body was returned to the United States for burial.

He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by the 4th Brigade Combat Team. His name is included on the Afghanistan War Memorial at Fort Bragg and the 'Fury' brigade's roll of honor for fallen soldiers from that deployment.
