U.S. Army Specialist Justin Dean Coleman, 21, of Weeki Wachee, Florida, was killed in hostile action in Nuristan Province, Afghanistan, on July 24, 2009.

Their Story

Justin Dean Coleman was a 21-year-old soldier from Weeki Wachee, Florida. He served as a Specialist with Company C, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, based at Fort Drum, New York. His military service included deployments to the Philippines and the Horn of Africa before his assignment to Afghanistan.

On July 24, 2009, Coleman was killed by enemy small-arms fire during combat operations in Nuristan Province, a remote and mountainous region in eastern Afghanistan. He was part of a unit engaged in operations against insurgent forces in the area.

Coleman's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks. The conflict involved coalition forces, the Afghan government, and insurgent groups including the Taliban and al-Qaeda.

According to a report from the Tampa Bay Times, Coleman was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal and Purple Heart. His body was returned to Florida, where a funeral service was held.

He is remembered by family and in local memorials in his hometown of Weeki Wachee. His name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Veterans Memorial Park in Spring Hill, Florida.
