Their Story

Chad Derek Coleman was a 20-year-old soldier from Moreland, Georgia. He served as a Specialist in the U.S. Army, assigned to Troop B, 1st Squadron, 33rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His unit deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On August 27, 2010, Coleman was killed in Dzardan D, a village in the volatile Paktia province of eastern Afghanistan. According to U.S. Department of Defense casualty reports, his death was the result of a hostile incident. No further specific details regarding the engagement were publicly released by the military.

Coleman's death occurred during a period of intense fighting in Afghanistan. The summer of 2010 saw a major U.S. and NATO troop surge aimed at countering a resilient Taliban insurgency. Paktia province, bordering Pakistan, was a known insurgent transit and staging area, making it a frequent site of combat operations.

Coleman's body was returned to the United States. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and other service medals. His funeral was held in his home state of Georgia.

He is memorialized on the Afghanistan War casualty lists and by veterans' organizations. His name appears on the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division memorial at Fort Campbell.
