Corporal Jeremiah Scott Cole, 26, of Hiawatha, Kansas, was a U.S. Army infantryman killed in hostile action on August 16, 2006, in Bermel, Afghanistan.

Their Story

Jeremiah Scott Cole was a 26-year-old soldier from Hiawatha, Kansas. He served as a corporal in Company B, 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, part of the 10th Mountain Division's Task Force Spartan based at Fort Drum, New York. Before his deployment to Afghanistan, his unit had also conducted missions in the Philippines and the Horn of Africa.

On August 16, 2006, Cole was killed during combat operations in Bermel, a district in Afghanistan's eastern Paktika province. According to U.S. military reports, his unit was engaged in a firefight with enemy forces. The specific incident that resulted in his death was not detailed in public releases beyond the classification as hostile action.

Cole's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2006, violence was escalating across the country as insurgent forces regrouped and intensified attacks, particularly in eastern provinces like Paktika where U.S. forces maintained a significant presence.

Following his death, the Department of Defense officially announced his loss. He was survived by his family in Kansas. A memorial service was reportedly held at Fort Drum.

Corporal Cole is listed on memorials honoring U.S. service members who died in Afghanistan. His name is among the 2,356 American service members who lost their lives during Operation Enduring Freedom, as tallied by the U.S. Department of Defense.
