Christopher James Coffland, 43, was a resident of Baltimore, Maryland, who served as a corporal in the U.S. Army Reserve. He was assigned to Company C, 321st Military Intelligence Battalion, based in Round Rock, Texas.
Coffland died on November 13, 2009, in the Sayed Abad District of Afghanistan's Wardak province. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, he was killed by an improvised explosive device that detonated near his vehicle while he was on a mounted patrol.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By late 2009, the conflict was marked by a significant increase in U.S. troop levels and a corresponding rise in insurgent attacks, particularly from roadside bombs.
The Department of Defense officially announced Coffland's death on November 14, 2009. His body was returned to the United States, and he was buried at Arlington National Cemetery.
