Their Story
Keaton Grant Coffey was a 22-year-old Marine corporal from Boring, Oregon. He served with the 1st Law Enforcement Battalion, I Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group, based at Camp Pendleton, California.
According to the Department of Defense, Cpl. Coffey died on May 24, 2012, in Helmand province, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained in a hostile incident. Official reports state he was killed by small arms fire while conducting combat operations in the Now Zad district.
Cpl. Coffey's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. His deployment was part of a sustained U.S. and NATO presence in Helmand, a province that saw intense fighting against Taliban insurgents.
His body was returned to the United States, and a funeral service was held in Portland, Oregon. The governor of Oregon ordered flags flown at half-staff in his honor.
Cpl. Coffey was posthumously promoted to the rank of corporal. He is remembered by his family and community, and his name is inscribed on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Oregon State Capitol.
