Clowers, Jesse Gladden Jr
Staff Sergeant Jesse Gladden Clowers Jr., 27, of Herndon, Virginia, was a U.S. Army Special Forces soldier. He was killed in action on August 12, 2007, in Kuzkalakhel, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Jesse Gladden Clowers Jr. was born on May 9, 1980, and grew up in Herndon, Virginia. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and became a Special Forces engineer sergeant, assigned to Company A, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
On August 12, 2007, Clowers was part of a mounted patrol in the village of Kuzkalakhel in Paktika Province, Afghanistan. According to U.S. military reports, his vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device (IED). The blast killed Clowers and wounded another soldier. He was 27 years old.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By 2007, insurgent forces, including the Taliban, had regrouped and were employing IEDs with increasing frequency, making them the leading cause of coalition casualties.
Clowers was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal. He was survived by his wife, parents, and siblings. A memorial service was held at Fort Bragg.
He is remembered on memorial walls at Fort Bragg and by the Special Forces community. In 2008, a street on the post was dedicated in his honor.
