U.S. Army Corporal Justin Robert Clouse, 22, of Sprague, Washington, was killed in action on June 9, 2014, in Arghandab, Afghanistan.
Their Story
Justin Robert Clouse was a 22-year-old soldier from the small town of Sprague, Washington. He served as an active-duty infantryman with Delta Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, part of Combined Joint Task Force-4 in Afghanistan.
On June 9, 2014, Corporal Clouse was killed by enemy small-arms fire during a dismounted patrol in the Arghandab District of Kandahar province. The district, a known agricultural region with extensive irrigation canals, was a persistent area of insurgent activity and a frequent site of engagements for U.S. and Afghan forces.
Clouse's death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. By mid-2014, the mission was in its final phase, transitioning to a train-and-advise role for Afghan forces as most U.S. combat troops prepared to withdraw by the end of the year.
His death was reported by the Department of Defense. He was posthumously promoted from Specialist to Corporal. According to local news reports, his body was returned to Washington state, and a funeral service was held in Sprague.
Corporal Clouse is memorialized on the Afghanistan War Memorial at the Washington State Capitol and on the online 'Faces of the Fallen' database. His name is also inscribed on the Afghanistan and Iraq War Memorial in Olympia, Washington.
