Their Story
Peter James Clore was a lance corporal in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 8, of the 2nd Marine Division, based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He was from New Philadelphia, Ohio, and was 23 years old at the time of his death.
On May 28, 2011, Clore was killed while conducting combat operations in the volatile Helmand province of southern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced his death the following day, stating he died of wounds sustained from hostile enemy action.
His death occurred during Operation Enduring Freedom, the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan that began in October 2001. In 2011, Helmand province was a major center of the insurgency and the site of intense fighting, particularly for Marine units tasked with securing population centers and disrupting Taliban networks.
