Theodore Clark Jr. was a 31-year-old Gunnery Sergeant from Emporia, Virginia, serving with the 1st Combat Engineer Battalion, 1st Marine Division, based at Camp Pendleton, California. He was deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom.
On August 4, 2005, Clark was killed by hostile fire in Gardez, the capital of Paktia province in eastern Afghanistan. The Department of Defense stated he died while conducting combat operations. The area was a known insurgent stronghold.
